2009 International 110 Class District One Championship Regatta

It was great to get back to Hull, MA.  A weekend of fierce competition against some of the top racing teams in the country.  As usual, racing a 110 is like going to a knife fight!  There were a total of seven boats competing for the impressive, Francis E. Charles, trophy.  Four of these boats placed top four at last years National Championship in Hull.  The trophy is forty-seven years old this year.  Looking back at some past winners, I noticed some familiar names.  Norm Cressy  won in 1964 & 1965; Jack Slattery in 1978, 1990 & 1991; Anna Longstaff & Oakley Jones in 2001; Various members of the Craig family have won it five times over the last twenty years.  Mark Van Note and I won on my other boat,  #631, U.S. Blues, in 2005.  Steve Clancy has been holding this trophy hostage for three years with some vary impressive boat handling skills.  It appeared as if  he would continue racking up engraving bills until the last run in the last race. Tensions were high.

110 Atlantics Hotties

Just take a look at this photogenic bunch, fresh off some great sailing in Newport at the 110 Atlantics.  Whilst the rest of Newport was snoozing away to the likes of Tony Bennett on shore at Jazz Fest, these 110 sailors were competing for the honor and glory of being 110 Atlantic champions.  Steve Clancy and John Murphy took the event, despite some impressive speed shown by Jeff Adam.  Writeup and results to follow once Steve sends them along...

BOSTON BAY CHALLENGE CUP

HULL, MA

July 11,12, 2009

The Boston Bay Challenge Cup was sailed with superb conditions and super competition.

Saturday a screaming southwester built up swells in the bay that were perfect size and speed for surfing a 110. The sailing was great, but the race management was a little screwed up (by me). Some sailors had either no race circular or the wrong one. And the sailors that had the correct circular had trouble finding the stealthy club marks or government buoys. The 3 races were declared a practice day to everyones satisfaction. While not good racing, everyone agreed it was some of the best 110 sailing ever experienced by any 110er who likes fast and wet. If records were kept, a record could have been set for sustained plaining by the entire fleet for the entire leeward leg.

Day 2 started properly with a skippers meeting and race circulars. A moderate westerly prevailed with smooth water and a strong incoming tide. . 3 races were close with varying wind velocity and subtle shifts to make the racing interesting with plenty of opportunities for the leaders to blow it and the rest of us to come back.

Highlights of the event included Will Laidlaw returning to Hull sailing his newly acquired Retread for the first time.  Retread is as beautiful as ever.  Ross Weene débuted an asymmetrical kite rig that he flew before and after racing. The rig is very cool!  Maggie Craig skippered her first 110 regatta with impressive boat speed and tactics.

All the competitors are now ready to return to Hull for the 110 Districts July 25 and 26.
